Chak

Chak

Intervention / land art festival Archsledi
2011 / Ufa / Russia

The festival was held on the territory of a hospital for children with disabilities. Several groups of students led by an initiative group of teachers built pavilions for the leisure of children and their parents.

Chak chak is a traditional dish of the Tatar and Bashkir cuisine, it is prepared for festive events and large tea parties. Held on New Year’s Eve, the concept of the pavilion was based on this dish as a symbol of celebration and cultural identity.

Wooden beams are stacked in a checkerboard pattern, forming a circular shape, traditional for chak chak. The height and diameter of the wooden structure were borrowed from the traditional nomadic dwelling of the Bashkirs - the yurt. Only unlike the original, without division into male and female zones, but rather a unifying space in which everyone can take any place.
