Cold to warm
and back again
Intervention / land art festival Archsledi
2014 / Ufa / Russia
The ice stage was designed to host the participants and winners of the festival, with its form inspired by the festival’s logo. Since the event took place in winter, sub-zero temperatures and harsh weather were an integral part of the concept.
Given that all festival structures were built under extreme cold, and participants had to find ways to stay warm—through hot tea or skating on the frozen river—the design intentionally combined elements of warmth and cold.
Warm wooden frames form the underlying structure, while a lightweight textile fabric, hand-sewn and then frozen with water on the exterior, serves both as a protective skin and as a structural element, creating a delicate interplay between softness and solidity.
